In the highlands of Cajamarca, sisters Ismeria and Merly LEON passionately cultivate coffee on their own farms, located in the same village but at different altitudes and with different varieties, which is reflected in their coffee. Ismeria’s lower-altitude farm produces a Caturra coffee with more acidity and a tea-like mouthfeel, while Merly’s higher-altitude coffee offers greater Bourbon sweetness and complexity.
Ismeria, a single mother of four, has taken charge of her own training, participating in workshops and consortiums to perfect her craft. Her dedication to excellence truly shows in her coffee.
Merly’s 2.5-hectare farm, El Churaz, benefits from abundant sunshine and cool nighttime temperatures—perfect for specialty coffee production. With support from her cooperative, Aroma del Valle, she has successfully produced micro-lots that are gaining international recognition.
