In our Coffee City Series, we visit one of the USA’s most famous West Coast coffee hubs: SAN FRANCISCO. Known as one of the “best coffee cities,” it also boasts prices to match. It was here in the late ’60s that Alfred Peet, the godfather of modern coffee, made his mark. Since then, coffee has remained central to the city, home to many renowned roasters and specialized bars. For Caffenation, San Francisco was where we honed our roasting skills in 2010 under the guidance of grand master Willem Boot.

This blend combines two fruity and clean washed coffees: Burundi HEZA HILLS and Ethiopia GEDEB.

  • Orange stone fruit
  • Marzipan and chocolate
  • Florals

HEZA was built into a cliff at the foot of Gitwe Hill. From here, the Rwandan border and the tips of the Kibira, Burundi’s only indigenous rainforest, can be seen looming in the distance. The individual micro-climates of each hill combined with the station’s ideal conditions result in a taste profile great for both filter and espresso brewing. This coffee has nice mouthfeel and a good balanced profile.

The GEDEB region in Yirgacheffe is known for producing unique and flavorful coffees. Factors such as altitude, climate, soil composition, and the meticulous processing techniques employed by the producers can all contribute to the distinctive flavors that come through in the cup. The Gedeb cup profile is all about fruits and florals!
