Rob says: As most Caffenation lovers know, every year we take a trip to Kenya to buy all of our Kenyan coffees. There we cup (blind) a few hundred coffees and finally buy between 8 to 10 lots. Only after cupping we see the names, origins, volumes and prices. Some coffee are famous, other not and from time to time we stumble upon something unknown, except for the grading. We mostly stick to coffees that are traceable and have a story, but this (no info-)lot was blowing us away at the tables and we had to have it.
Buying the lot should have been relatively simple, but there was a second problem; the coffee wasn’t bought yet and needed to go to the auction a couple hours later and the Kenyacof buyer was already on its way to the exchange. So we called him and told him to make a bid for us. Which finally was accepted!!
Kenya’s coffee auction system is unique and dates back to 1934. The auctions still take place at the Nairobi Coffee Exchange and are widely considered to be most transparent distribution system for fine green coffees anywhere in the coffee world and has inspired the model for the Cup of Excellence auctions.
